Paris Luxury Hotels such as the Renaissance Paris Vendôme, the Meurice, the Ritz Paris, the Park Hyatt Paris Vendôme and the Marriott Champs-Elysées are joining the select group of Paris 5 star hotels.

Five luxury hotels in Paris received a fifth star, bringing the total number of 5 star Paris hotels to eight.

Beginning of June, three other Parisian luxury hotels had already obtained this desirable label; they are the Fouquet’s Barrière, the Hyatt Regency Paris Madeleine, and the Square.

Since January 1^st 2009, luxury hotels in France can apply for the 5 star rating. The former set of criteria which dates from 1986, only had the highest ranking for a hotel at 4 stars. Paris luxury hotels saw this as a disadvantage compared to their foreign competitors, where 5 stars were awarded to the most luxury hotels. The new scale ranges from 1 star to 5 stars and has removed the previous possibility of  a 0 star hotel.

With the Fouquet’s Barrière, the Ritz and Le Meurice, three of the seven so called “Paris palace hotels” now have a fifth star. This very select circle of palaces also includes the Bristol, the Crillon, the George V and the Plaza-Athénée.

The government has confirmed its intention to add a premium term to the 5th star for those palaces. A working group has been formed which make proposals before the end of the year.
