A strike among personnel at some of Paris’s most-frequented museums and monuments has led to a shutdown of museums including the Centre Georges Pompidou and sights like the Arc de Triomphe.

The strike, which began at the Centre Pompidou’s Museum of Modern Art on November 23, has extended to the Musée Rodin, the Sainte-Chapelle Cathedral and the Musée d’Orsay, according to the Associated Press. The Louvre has closed partially, but not entirely, according to other sources. Workers at the closed establishments are reportedly protesting a decision by President Nicolas Sarkozy’s administration to eliminate half the jobs of retiring civil servants.

It’s unclear how long the strike may go on, but since Paris is the world’s leading tourist destination, it’s likely to have a strong impact.
