Great Parisians: Simone de Beauvoir

“One is not born a woman, but becomes one.”

Long before the emergence of Women’s Studies on college campuses and wide acceptance of the notion that traditional gender roles largely amount to social constructions, Simone de Beauvoir boldly and clearly asserted the idea in a single sentence in her 1949 book The Second Sex. In celebration of International Women’s Day, I wanted to pay tribute to a great Parisian and universal thinker who in many ways was instrumental in laying the groundwork for women’s rights movements around the globe.
