Paris in September: The Unofficial New Year

Often less expensive than an April or August sojourn, September in Paris is more pleasant than reputed. Clear skies and crisp air are actually more common in September than in July or August, when muggy thunderstorm conditions tend to reign, and with the back-to-work-and-school spirit working its magic, the city seems to come out of a period of near-dormancy. In fact, I’ve often said September is the real new year in Paris: a time when fresh ideas tend to burst onto the scene again, and everyone kicks back into gear after doing next to nothing during the summer. Theater, art and movie aficionados will appreciate the programs packed with listings of new shows and exhibits; amateurs of local politics will like the fact that the intrigue and power plays are back after the summer hiatus, while long strolls around the city are rarely more pleasant than in September.
