Paris Announced AutoLib’ – The Electric Car Rental Program

Friday 25 September 2009

Paris announced AutoLib’, the electric car rental program similar to Velib’ the bike rental program. “I want to make Paris a modern city, united and bold,” said Bertrand Delanoë mayor of Paris, declaring himself “a principal proponent of the electric vehicle” because he uses an electric Citroën Saxo since 2001.

At the start there will be 3000 electric cars available but the plan is to have total 4000 AutoLib’s available in Paris and its suburbs. The plan has broader support in the suburbs than Vélib’ which initially started only in Paris. At the announcement of the Autolib’ program 26 cities of the inner suburbs have already decided to join.

Autolib’ follows the same model as the Vélib’ rental bikes program which was successfully launched in 2007. Goal of both programs is to limit the possession of individual vehicles in Paris and reduce emissions of CO2 and pollutants. The electrical cars will be stationed in over 1000 parkings across Paris and its suburbs will be available 24 on 24, seven days a week.
